Its vast territory, inhabited since ancient times, in the Middle Ages was part of the county of Grassuliato (a castle-farmhouse a few kilometers from Mazzarino).<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/it.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Branciforte\">Branciforti<\/a> family, owner of this vast feudal domain, between the end of the sixteenth century and the early seventeenth century began the work of dismembering the fiefdom in order to derive greater profits from the census revenues.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_768\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-768\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ricercagenealogica.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/08-600x386.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"386\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ricercagenealogica.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/08-600x386.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.ricercagenealogica.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/08-768x495.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ricercagenealogica.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/08-280x180.jpg 280w, https:\/\/www.ricercagenealogica.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/08.jpg 823w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-768\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Niscemi &#8211; Main Square<\/p><\/div>\n<p>According to an ancient tradition, on May 16, 1599 a shepherd named Andrea Armao found, in the woods in the Castellana district, an image of the Holy Mother with the blessing Child Jesus. The discovery took place near a source of water to which miraculous properties were soon attributed. On 5 March 1626 Giovanna Branciforti paid the prescribed tax of 400 ounces and on 30 June of the same year she obtained the <a href=\"https:\/\/it.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Licentia_populandi\"><em>licentia populandi<\/em><\/a>. On March 25, 1627, Giuseppe Branciforti was invested with the title of prince of Niscemi.<\/p>\n<p>In 1636 the new village had a population of 350 inhabitants, but only starting from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ricercagenealogica.it\/en\/sources\/\">Rivelo<\/a> (census) of 1656 can we know the composition and origin of the individual families. In that year 159 families lived in Niscemi, for a total of 574 inhabitants.<\/p>\n<p>The following list reports the surnames of the first families residing in Niscemi, with their place of origin.
